WHAT IS LINEAGE?

Contrary to the many ways in which Tantra is misrepresented in Western society, it is in fact an ancient spiritual science, with many different roots and branches manifesting as various traditions and lineages.

Lineage is like a stamp of approval of the quality of the teachings.

It means the effects are validated and the results you can expect from practicing them will be worth it. In Tantra, the lineage ensures the following: there was a master/guru who was practicing and reaching higher states of consciousness and there was a student who was following his footsteps, and as a result he/she ended up in the same place that the guru did. Then the one who was the disciple became the teacher and passed the experience to the next generation and so forth to the next and to the next. The lineage of teaching can be traced back hundreds of years as a line of many enlightened masters.
I personally find it important that if I dedicate my precious time and efforts to something it should be verifiable. There are 4 simple aspects that will help you understand how to distinguish the authentic Tantra from modern Tantra, an authentic Tantra school from new-age Tantra school.

AUTHENTIC TANTRA FROM ITS MODERN ADAPTATIONS

  • The tradition of the lineage

  • Neo-Tantra or modern approaches to Tantra do not always rely on lineage

  • Authentic traditional Tantra originates from ancient tantric texts and scriptures, which are called agamas. There were 64 agamas and the majority of them have been translated to modern languages. In addition to the agamas, there are many other tantric texts and books that we can call the ABCs of Tantra such as: Hatha yoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita, Siva Samhita and many others that you can study with the guidance of your guru

  • The modern teachings of Tantra tend to focus on a very small spectrum of tantric teachings, specifically sexual teachings. Tantra is not only about sexuality. The authentic Tantra gives you many more opportunities and tools to uplift your spiritual life

I can proudly say I adhere to the authentic teachings of the Somananda Tantra School, where I studied. The core basis of all teachings under this School is Kashmiri Shaivism. This ancient lineage can be traced all the way back to the great masters such as Abhinavagupta from the 12th century and those that came before him.
